Plumbing failures
Supply lines to toilets, sinks and washing machines are a frequent culprit. Braided lines and rubber hoses wear out over time and can fail without warning.
Frozen pipes
Pipes along exterior walls, in garages or crawl spaces are vulnerable during cold snaps. Ice expands and can split a pipe; the leak often appears when it thaws.
Sump pump and drainage problems
Power outages during storms, stuck float switches and undersized pumps all lead to basement water. Discharge lines that freeze or drain too close to the house can also cause trouble.
Sewer backups
When sewers are overwhelmed during heavy rain, water can push back through floor drains. Backwater valves help protect against this.
Roof, window and foundation leaks
- Clogged eavestroughs overflowing at the foundation
- Cracked foundation walls
- Deteriorated window well drains
- Ice dams on the roof
Appliances
Water heaters, dishwashers, fridges with ice makers and air conditioning condensate lines can all leak slowly or fail suddenly.
