Put safety first
Don't walk into a flooded basement if water may be in contact with outlets, extension cords or the furnace. If you can reach your electrical panel from a dry area, switch off power to the basement. If not, call Alectra Utilities or an electrician.
Find and stop the source
If the water is from a plumbing failure, close the main shut-off valve. If it's coming up through a floor drain, avoid running water, flushing toilets or using the washer until the backup is resolved.
Document everything
- Photograph the water level and affected rooms before moving anything
- Take close-ups of damaged items and serial numbers on appliances
- Note the date and time you discovered the water
- Call your insurer to open a claim
Start removing water quickly
The longer water sits, the more it soaks into drywall, framing and flooring. Professional extraction and structural drying significantly reduce secondary damage like mold and warping.
Don't rush to close things up
A basement can look dry within a day while the walls and subfloor are still wet. Wait until moisture readings confirm drying is complete before repairs begin.
